Lens Lab: Scanner Artistry – Long Exposure Meets Technology

Lens Lab: Scanner Artistry – Long Exposure Meets Technology

Dive into the unique world of scanner photography, where traditional long-exposure techniques meet unconventional imaging tools. In this experimental workshop, participants will use flatbed scanners to create stunning abstract compositions, combining movement, texture, and light in unexpected ways.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the fundamentals of long exposure and apply them to scanner photography.

  • Experiment with moving objects, hands, and light sources to create dynamic effects.

  • Explore the scanner's resolution and how it captures depth and motion.

Materials Needed:

  • Flatbed scanners (provided or participants can bring their own).

  • Small objects (e.g., flowers, fabric, reflective surfaces).

  • Colored gels or light sources for added visual effects.

  • Laptops with image editing software for immediate feedback.

Warnings/Precautions:

  • Handle with care: Flatbed scanners are delicate and can be damaged by excessive pressure. Participants should avoid pressing too hard on the scanner surface.

  • Be cautious with liquids: If using water or other liquids in your experiments (e.g., water droplets on flowers), ensure they are carefully applied to avoid damaging the scanner.

  • Clear Soap Caution: This workshop will involve using clear soap, which can damage items or render them unusable after being coated. We recommend using flowers or objects that you don’t mind soaking in soap.

  • Limited scan area: The scanner’s working area is typically smaller than traditional photo setups. Make sure objects fit within the scanner bed’s dimensions before starting.

Schedule:

  1. Introduction (15 minutes): Overview of scanner photography and its creative possibilities.

  2. Demo (15 minutes): Live demonstration of scanning techniques and settings.

  3. Hands-On Practice (60 minutes): Participants create their own works with guidance.

  4. Showcase & Feedback (15 minutes): Share results and discuss challenges or discoveries.

Add-On: Print Your CreationsAt the end of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to print their best images on high-quality paper to take home. Prints are available on a first come, first served basis, as supplies may be limited. Please note that due to time constraints and material availability, we recommend you prioritize your top images for printing.
